Baxandall
What is the take away for Baxandall?
He only talks about religion to say, that he does not, talk about religion.
He also focuses on materials, but mainly how much the materials are worth.
That money matters, who is buying the art, how much are they buying it for.
He is incredibly interested in patrons, and what the patrons are interested in.
Politics is a big focus for Baxandall, he wants to know what a patron gets out of a work of art.
There are political reasons, why patrons purchase art and give it to the community.
He has a focus on power, class, and society.
He talks about how art serves the interest, of those at the top of society, and keeps them on top.
Baxandall argues there is a change in style between the early and late 1400s, as in the early 1400s buyers want art made of rare materials, but in the late 1400s they no longer desire art made of rare and expensive materials. This is because the price of rare materials increased after the early 1400s. He believes the Italian Early Renaissance was ushered in, do to cheap patrons, who wanted to use cheaper materials, which resulted in art constructed with cheaper materials.
